Why the apparatus begins with Soma Foundation

1 min read

Every new apparatus student at Soma begins with the same three sessions — whether they arrive brand new to movement or with years of reformer experience from other studios. That rule can look like a hurdle. It is the opposite — it is the fastest route into the work.

The apparatus rewards precision more than effort. Springs, carriage, straps, arcs: the equipment amplifies whatever you bring to it, including your habits. Three quiet, semi-private hours are enough to learn how breath drives the work, where your alignment actually is (rarely where we imagine it), and what control feels like against resistance — on equipment Joseph Pilates designed for exactly this.

After those three hours, an open class stops being choreography to keep up with and becomes training you direct from inside. You know your spring settings, you know your positions, and your teacher can spend your class hour refining you — not orienting you.

Soma Foundation — Apparatus is three sessions, 895 kr, always with four people at most. Matwork, as ever, needs no introduction — come as you are.
